Towards the very tip of the country, a three-hour drive or short 35-minute flight from Auckland, is where you’ll find the magical Bay of Islands. As the name suggests, this minor region is a subtropical paradise of islands dotted outside the main coastline.

By land, enjoy beautiful walks, explore gorgeous local towns, and cycle from coast to coast. By sea, dive with friendly marine life, take a cruise between islands, or hire a sea kayak to explore the untouched beaches at your leisure.

Whether you’re travelling on a budget or splashing out on a lavish vacation, our list of Bay of Islands holiday homes has a variety of accommodation options to suit your stay.

The location

The Bay of Islands region encompasses 144 islands off the northeastern coast of the North Island, including the small towns of Opua, Paihia, Russel and Kerikeri. Renowned for its natural beauty and pristine beaches, the collection of islands, peninsulas and coastal towns is a seaside haven for holiday-goers all year round, as the subtropical climate means relatively warm temperatures through all months of the year.

Paihia serves as the main gateway to the Bay of Islands, a hub for tourism activities. Offering an array of restaurants and tour operators, the town makes for a convenient base to then explore the region.

Things to do

With so many corners of the region to explore, here are just a few items to tick off your bucket list...

>> Discover a fascinating underwater world

Home to world-class scuba diving spots, explore sunken shipwrecks, meet a variety of sea life including dolphins, eels and whales, and marvel at the colourful reefs flourishing beneath the ocean’s surface. Rainbow Warrior and the Canterbury Wreck are two must-see spots for divers in the Bay of Islands.

>> Cruise through the ‘Hole in the Rock’

One of the region’s most iconic natural attractions due to its remarkable formation, the ‘Hole in the Rock’ holds much more fascination than its name suggests. Located on Motukokako Island off the tip of Cape Brett, this massive 16-metre-high and 22-metre-wide arch has been formed by years of erosive wind and water wearing away at the rock. Countless cruises pass through the tunnel, allowing passengers an up-close view of this marvellous natural wonder.

>> See the Waitangi Treaty Grounds

A visit to the Bay of Islands would be incomplete without a trip to one of the most important historical sites in the country. It was here in 1840 that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the indigenous Ma?ori people and representatives of the British Crown, founding modern New Zealand as it is today. Explore two contemporary museums - Te Ko?ngahu Museum of Waitangi and Te Rau Aroha Museum of the Price of Citizenship - the beautifully carved meeting house of Te Whare Ru?nanga, and the Treaty House. Stay for moving cultural performances of waiata (songs), poi and a traditional haka (war dance).

>> Enjoy water activities galore

Sailing, kayaking, fishing, snorkelling, diving, dolphin watching... the list goes on. The sheltered waters provide ideal conditions for boating and yachting, and the region is famous for its big-game fishing.

>> Venture on the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail

From the eastern coast of the Bay of Islands to the western coast of Hokianga Harbour, the Twin Coast Cycle Trail is a fabulous cross-country journey at a relatively easy grade to cruise through the countryside in a relaxed yet rewarding fashion. Broken into four sections, tackle the 87 km trail over 2 days, or simply catch a glimpse of the experience with a shorter day ride.

>> Trek the Bay of Islands Coastal Walkway

If you’re an enthusiastic walker, this track is not to be missed from your itinerary. Set aside a full day to immerse yourself in the Bay of Islands' natural beauty as you trek through winding coastal tracks, forests, mangroves, and the charming towns of Paihia, Opua, Okiato and Russell. The loop has a number of different points from which you can start, using multiple ferry links to complete the circuit.

Whether you’re looking to stay in the tourism hub of Paihia or in any one of the quaint surrounding towns, our range of Bay of Islands accommodation will cater to exactly what you’re looking for.
