Elsie “Wonderful stay again.”
Third time for us in the same house. Recommend this holiday home highly!
Third time for us in the same house. Recommend this holiday home highly!
- Elsie, February 2023 -
Aby “The weather didn’t play nice for our visit, but we were still looking forward to staying at this beautiful holiday home.”
On arrival, we noticed that the bedrooms were much smaller than they appeared in the photos online. The house itself was beautiful, but desperately needed a spring clean. In particular, the upstairs deck and downstairs concrete could do with a water blast to remove the slippery mould (which our granddaughter slipped on at times). At minimum, for the cleaning fee everyone pays on top of their stay, there shouldn’t be cobwebs or rubbish under the beds and couches. Given the location we were expecting some dampness, but this was a much bigger issue then we anticipated. We had to run the dehumidifiers 24/7, emptying each one at least 3 times a day. The carpet at the bottom of the stairs was especially damp, and we had to keep the bedroom doors closed to contain the smell. This was a concern as our granddaughter is asthmatic, and she did not sleep well because of the moisture. The amenities were not great either as the dryer took an entire day to dry one sheet and it leaked water onto the ground. I really didn’t want to give this property a bad review, but it wasn’t an enjoyable stay, money was not well spent, and we won’t be returning to Pukawa Haven.
- Aby, January 2023We are so very sorry that the weather and the house were not as you had hoped. We will certainly address the cleaning issues you have raised as this is not to our usual high standard. Hopefully, you will give us another chance! Bachcare
Johnathan “Really enjoyed our week at this holiday home.”
Specific feedback: - Yes the rooms downstairs are musty on arrival, but this comes right if the doors and windows are opened up for a while. - Yes the stairwell, bathroom, and third bedroom are steep/tight/small, but fine for kids. - Before I booked I checked with Bachcare that I'd be able to manouvre my 5.5m boat in and out of the property, and they confirmed this. In practice the driveway is too tight for this, in part because the owner has left their boat sitting in the driveway. - The deck, deck sofa cushions, and deck furniture has been hammered by the weather and is in need of replacement or cleaning. - The kitchen, while small was well equipped and everything worked well; - The lounge was very comfortable, and light. No online TV or Freeview (disconnected), but the DVD player was working. WiFi was working. - Great location: down a right of way at the end of a quiet cul de sac, in a quiet lakeside Village. Slept really well.
- Johnathan, January 2023Lucy “My husband and I booked this holiday home for Christmas with our mothers, and the birdsong was so lovely to walk up to every day, however unfortunately there were a few things the let us down - the key wasn’t where bachcare/ the property manager said it would be in the instructions provided, so we eventually checked in about 2 hours after we arrived.”
We also booked this place to be able to dine and enjoy the outside seating area for Christmas, however they had locked away all of the soft furnishing to be able to sit on, and we couldn’t sit comfortably on the outdoor lounge set and had to spend more time inside durning super hot weather. Our mothers had to air out the downstairs bedrooms before they could use them as they were damp and smelt mouldy, the beds were not comfortable at all (this would have been fine if everything else had been great, as people’s preferences for softness of beds varies, but we all found the mattresses to be extremely soft). The listing also says the lake is a ‘few minutes’ walk away - it is about 15 minutes through a steep bush track that neither of our mothers could do, so we drove them down to the lake when they wanted to go - so anyone with mobility issues wouldn’t be able to get down to the lake via bush access. I feel that this should be added to the listing as families may book this place due to the lake access mentioned.
- Lucy, December 2022Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback and we will address the issues you have raised. We do hope that you and your mothers had an enjoyable Christmas away. Bachcare
Cris “Lovely property , fab kitchen, beds super comfy, love the fireplace.”
Great location near walking tracks and wonderful wildlife right next to the deck
- Cris, October 2022Sandra “Where do I even begin?”
! This was thee worst Bach we’ve ever stayed at in NZ. The lounge and kitchen were clean but the bedrooms were FILTHY!! The bedding was white and extremely dirty. You could tell it hadn’t been washed in months. If you know you don’t like washing often then don’t get white bedding the most telling colour. There was what looked like Pee stains on the bedding in one bedroom and the other 2 bedrooms also had stains and lots of HAIR on the bed and duvet cover. It was a mixture of animal hair and human hair, absolutely appalling. We arrived at the Bach at 11pm and only went to bed at 3am because we decided to wash the bedding. It was too filthy for us to get into it unwashed. This really savoured the experience of our holiday and we’d never return to Pukawa “Haven” even if it was free. We even have photos and videos as proof of what we’re saying. Happy to attach, please provide link to attach. Don’t have time to be fabricating stories, happy to back it up with photo evidence. We tried calling Bachcare customer care on Saturday morning 4/06/22 to tell them of our horrible experience and no one picked up the phone. It’s now Friday 10/06/22 and the phone still hasn’t been picked up to this date. I’ve tried calling the number on the website and our confirmation email everyday at least twice a day, no one picks up. Never going with company or property again!
- Sandra, June 2022We are so very sorry for your experience and our sincere apologies that the usually high cleaning standard was not adhered to on this occasion. Bachcare
Julie-anne “Wonderful, secluded spot to stay in.”
Very private deck with great bbq overlooking native trees and the sound of the stream in the distance. The birdlife is magical. Bright, sunny house with a well equipped kitchen. Very comfortable selection of couches to watch the great dvd, puzzle and games collection, and wifi!! We had a wonderful, relaxed holiday and would definitely stay again.
- Julie-anne, March 2022Angela “Beautiful relaxing place with birdsong and stunning bush views.”
Well set out for a family / group great indoor outdoor flow. Will use again for sure.
- Angela, January 2022Anne “Amazing place to relax and get away.”
Home had everything we needed. Kitchen well appointed. Loved our stay, thanks very much.
- Anne, December 2021David “Quiet private bach at end of dead end street.”
Surrounded by bush and lots of bird life. Large lounge area and well stocked kitchen and games/ books. Awkward stairs in various areas and could do with some general maintenance to tidy up a few areas.
- David, October 2021jenny “A superb holiday home if you looking for a space to rest and relax.”
This home is comfortable, well equipped and warm. Heaters, heat pump and fire place. Set in the bush with an amazing outlook, wake up to birdsong and watch the birds feeding from the deck or from the lounge. Warm sunshine pours into the living areas. This was our second visit and it’s one of our favourite holiday homes. I’m sure we will be back again!
- jenny, October 2021Leissa “Great family Bach, perfect set up for self catering and warm fire during the winter months!”
Great location for day trips to the mountain too!
- Leissa, July 2021Hailee “House had every essential needed except hot water.”
My friends and I weren’t able to have a shower or wash clothes during our stay as we had no hot water whatsoever. We had forgotten towels the first night, and were out of the house early in the morning for an event in Rotorua, returning back at around 9pm (now with towels). Turned on the shower and was freezing cold after 10 minutes of being on. We left it running longer than 5 mins thinking maybe it just needed a little longer to warm up. When I messaged the owner about this, she replied with “it would’ve been good to be informed about it this morning.” We weren’t too happy, and to be honest the hot water should’ve been checked prior to our arrival. House is very cold as well, took forever to warm up.
- Hailee, July 2021Thank you for taking the time to let us know that the hot water at Pukawa Haven was not adequately heated during your stay. We are so sorry that your showers were not as warm as had hoped and the temperature of the water did correct itself after your departure and is in good working order. We were glad to discuss this with you further in more detail privately. Bachcare

The silence, peace and tranquility was lovely! A roaring fire and a cosy winters retreat - close enough for us to head up to Whakapapa for our kids first ever play in the snow - then back home to enjoy another night.

- Ellyn, June 2019Jessie “Great house nice and warm everything you need and more”
- Jessie, May 2019Hollie “I wouldn't stay here again and don't recommend it to others unless they are travelling as a couple - in which case they can have a nice bedroom in the upper half of the house.”
Anyone relegated to the dungeon downstairs will not have a nice holiday (it's dank, dark and dirty).
- Hollie, February 2019Hi Hollie - we really appreciate your feedback on this property and our Holiday Manager is working closely with the owners to rectify the issues downstairs. We've had great feedback from guests about this area lately so it's awesome that things have improved! Bachcare
