Brooke “The house is beautiful, in a gorgeous location, wonderful views.”
Old and quirky, but very comfortable and homely. Very well stocked with appliances (even a slow cooker!) and the underfloor heating in the tiled areas were a surprise. Plenty of room for our two sets of parents and two teenagers. The breakfast nook, expansive lounge and sun-room provided ample space to relax and converse, without feeling like we were in each other's pockets. The roadworks however was the downside. We booked McAlister House well-over a year ago and had I known there was an arterial road going to intersect Ballarat Street to make it impassable on foot, I wouldn't have booked. The trip down the very steep hill on Turner Street and back up with four elderly parents made it quite difficult. We ended up having to get Ubers at $11 each way, which added up quickly. If you don't mind walking steep gradients after a long day of exploring, then McAlister House is for you. The guide-book needs updating. There's still no SkyTV remote and the bin collection process is convoluted and confusing. We put the bins out and the glass bin did not get collected for some unknown reason. There's a small ceiling leak in the kitchen when it rains as well (drips onto the kitchen bench). The ensuite upstairs only has a shower curtain and no shower tray, so the water spreads to the doorway across the tiles. There's holes in the rusted guttering as well. A bit of maintenance work needs to be done on the house to keep it from falling into disrepair. The laundry facilities were handy. And the gardens were beautiful. We lost hot water and power on one side of the house in our 2nd week. Bachcare customer support were helpful in getting this fixed for us quickly. We would probably stay again if we didn't have elderlies with us - that hill is a real heart-starter, even for us!

lance “Very disappointed that owner took the sky remote so made watching tv hard.”
also, very disappointed that the rubbish bins were not emptied when we went to put our rubbish out and the worse thing was a guy turning up to do something in the house without us been informed at all. overall, very pleased with how the house was presented and looking forward to staying there again in the future.
- lance, April 2024Rebecca “We loved our stay however were disappointed with the lack of communication about the multiple roadworks that are being undertaken on several roads in the immediate area accessing the property.”
We chose this house because of its location straight down to the town however could not access this road by car or foot and needed to detour. A heads up prior to our arrival would’ve been appreciated otherwise the house itself was amazing and exactly what we needed in terms of facilities.
- Rebecca, February 2024Nathan “We booked McAllister house for my 40th birthday celebrations.”
The house was in a great central location (about 10 minute walk to town with diversions in place). The view down t othe town and lake was spectacular and a great way to start the day. The house was clean and tidy and had all the conveniences we needed. The only complaint is being a slightly older house, the other bedrooms were on the small side for 2 adults, but the large living area more than makes up for that!
- Nathan, October 2023Laura “We loved our stay and thought that overall the property was fantastic - cozy, spacious, well-equipped and a great location.”
However, one thing really impacted our comfort in a big way: the beds in every single room desperately need replacing. Every one of us struggled to sleep at night, thanks to sagging mattresses, poor quality pillows and tired old divans that could barely support a child's weight, let alone two grown adults. For a house of this size and quality, we'd have expected something much higher. I've had better nights' sleep in a hostel bunk bed. If it wasn't for this issue, we'd gladly give the property five stars and return again and again. Let us know if/when you replace the mattresses and we will definitely be back!

We appreciate you taking the time to provide some feedback on your experience and what could be improved for your further comfort should you stay here again. Your comments regarding the beds have been passed on to the owner and will be reviewed. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay here regardless and we look forward to hosting you again. Christine “Excellent property for families.”
Very well equipped kitchen with everything you need. Lovely warm house to come back to after a busy day.
- Christine, July 2023Tineke “The accomodation was brilliant, lovely location close to town.”
The toys and facilities were great for family. Great layout with plenty of space, lovely garden and outdoor areas. The wheelie rubbish bin was super full before we stayed, and the house had a few things in need of repair (washing line, hot water jug lid didn’t open etc) otherwise would highly recommend and would definitely consider staying again.
- Tineke, October 2022Hi Tineke, Thank you for your review. We are so pleased you enjoyed the property. Thank you for advising of the maintenance items and we will get straight onto these. We hope to see you again in the future. Thank you again! Bachcare
Jo “This was a good property but unfortunately the lack of understanding or flexibility when our situation abruptly and significantly changed was extremely disappointing.”
This situation was out of our control and although I am aware this was also out of the owners and Bachcare's control this could have been handled significantly better than it was; therefore I would not recommend bachcare or this property to others.
- Jo, October 2022Hi JO, Thank you for your feedback. Flexibility of your booking was extended and we offered the option to change dates of your booking which is outside of our terms and conditions to aid the situation. We do hope to have you stay at one of our properties again in the future. Bachcare
Harriet “We loved the house.”
Just a couple of plumbing issues: 1. The downstairs loo makes a horrible noise. 2. The water is not hot in the kitchen and it takes a very long time to come through. 3. The outlet of the basin in the upstairs family bathroom is blocked. Thanks very much indeed, Robin & Harriet
- Harriet, June 2022Caitlin “Such a beautiful property!”

Perfect for our requirements
- Jan, January 2021Angela “McAllister House is a lovely older home with big living areas, comfortable couches and plenty of room for 8 guests.”
The house is very well equipped with everything guests could wish for and includes a nice private garden area with outdoor furniture. The property is very close to the town centre in Queenstown however it is a very steep street to walk down and up. Our group of over 70's didn't complain. Thoroughly recommend this property

- Lawrence, May 2019Simon “Great house for our multi- generational family stay with everything we needed.”
Stunning views over Queenstown and the lake from the living room and master bedroom. Nice and warm and very quiet.
- Simon, May 2019David “McAlister House did not disappoint!”
From the peaceful and private patio, to the charming interior and amazing views from the master bedroom balcony, we were all very impressed. The house is a short walk to town and has all the comforts of home. There were 6 of us in 4 different bedrooms and there was ample space for us all. Highly recommend.
