Michelle “Great place to get away from it all and to Just be in nature”
- Michelle, January 2024Allan “First off driving into the bach we weren't too sure of if was right place or ...”
First off driving into the bach we weren't too sure of if was right place or not as parked a bit back from the bach and photos were of the other side otherwise walk in pleasantly surprised even nice eggs at the table spa and sauna ready too go has a visit from a very friendly dog and some chickens which was great as didn't have the best of all weather ,overall we do recommend the stay
- Allan, October 2023Sally “Amazing cottage with the serenity we needed for a relaxing weekend.”
The spa and sauna were a great addition as was the sound of the nearby stream.... Idealic. We will definitely be back
- Sally, October 2023Fiona “We enjoyed our weekend at your property and did some exploring around the area - thank you.”
A little more overgrown and not quite as tidy outside as the picture showed but still lovely. We hadn't expected to see another house from the spa so that was a little disappointing. Didn't love that the rooster woke us early but ear plugs fixed that the 2nd night. Super clean and tidy and the double shower in the bathrooom a novelty we enjoyed. Could get cell coverage on 4G which was a pleasant surprise.
- Fiona, January 2023Paul “Private and peaceful.”
Loved the sauna and spa. The eggs and lemons were appreciated. The kitchen was well equipped. Good to have a fan. Great stay. Would love to return.
- Paul, January 2023Shanelle “Absolutely beautiful location, beautiful veiw, had a treat of fresh eggs and lemons”
- Shanelle, December 2022Kelly “Great spot, very remote took a while to get used to having no WIFI/phone reception but it was a good thing to unwind.”
A lovely spa is available - Comfortable bed. I forgot to order sheets/towels big shout out to Bachcare and the manager who sorted me out last minute, much appreciated.
- Kelly, November 2022Mike “Lovely wee cottage tucked away in a quiet valley.”
Was great to sit and relax in the spa listening to the nearby stream and birds. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we hope to visit again.
- Mike, October 2022Ange “Loved staying here, so peaceful & relaxing, the sound of the stream was lovely.”
Slant on the floor added a cool vibe to the place. Unfortunately the spa wasnt working which was a downer as we were both sore & looking forward to a good soak. Sauna was great.
- Ange, October 2022Marlena “Loved this little gem.”

- Marlena, September 2022Elody “Wonderful stay for my birthday, we are coming back for long weekend in October and can't wait!”

- Elody, August 2022Eleanor “Had a great weekend at this lovely bach.”
First time using a sauna. Loved it. Thank you very much. Lots of wonderful memories
- Eleanor, June 2022Sophie “Great location, great spa and sauna and really cool space overall.”
The only cons were the fireplace likely being blocked and smoking everything out + the mice (but you can get around this by ensuring all your food is in the fridge and your luggage zipped up). Outside of those two issues we had a really great time - the house was well equipped!
- Sophie, May 2022Clarice “Staying here as surpassed all expectations.”
We loved the peace, nature and views of hillsides, trees in Autumn, the orchard and chooks, listening to the stream and resting deeply. Reading widely and loving the sauna and spa pool. We thought we'd explore the coast line more where I have been foraging before, but found ourselves just getting more deeply into rest. We found being away from cell phones and wifi is so important and very nourishing. Can't wait to stay again. Thanks for creating and sharing this special place.
- Clarice, April 2022James “Place is on a slant.”
So made bed very uncomfortable. Ended up ending the stay early as our backs took a beating. Mice also found their way into our bags. Then pooped all through the kitchen cupboards. Spa was nice
- James, April 2022Heather “A lovely quaint place, in a tranquil location.”
The sound of the creek running and native birds singing created a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Everything you needed for a peaceful getaway.
- Heather, January 2022Maciej “Great cosy place with amazing atmosphere”
- Maciej, November 2021Katie “Beautiful surroundings, very peaceful and relaxing place was stunning and the added bonus of the spa and sauna”

The property
Matagouri Cottage, in Port Levy, is the ideal place for a romantic weekend or just total peaceful relaxation. Port Levy is only an hour’s drive from Christchurch on a sealed road for all but the last kilometre, but is a very different and special place. The cottage sits in an orchard in a quiet valley, surrounded by Banks Peninsula’s ancient hills. Outside the door, a sheltered spa pool and sauna overlook the shaded Owhetoro Stream. The cottage is well and comfortably furnished, packed with character and charm, and offers the perfect spot to unwind and indulge with your loved one, use as a base to explore Port Levy’s and Banks Peninsula’s many delights, or just relax and leave the busy world behind. It stands in the grounds of the old Owhetoro homestead, but hedges and plantings assure you of total privacy. A cosy and colourful space welcomes you in the open plan living room and bedroom. A woodburner fireplace offers toasty ambience for evening relaxation, perhaps curled up with a book from the bookshelves or watching your favourite shows on the smart TV with Freeview. There is a luxurious king-sized bed and ample storage space so you can unpack at once and get into that holiday mood. You can whip up a magical platter or meals in the fully-equipped kitchen. As well as the intimate paved courtyard outside the French doors, ideal for a nibble and a glass or two of wine, there are deckchairs and lawns for sunbathing. You can soak in the spa or sweat in the sauna. After a peaceful night’s rest you will awaken to birdsong and a leisurely morning. This is an enchanted retreat. There is ample carparking in the old cattleyards, and plenty of room to park a boat out on the quiet road. If you want to wander, you could stay close to home and pack a picnic, to be enjoyed at the Port Levy wharf, just five minutes or so away. Port Levy’s favourite swimming beach is a couple of hundred yards beyond. Port Levy has a rich Maori and European history, and an increasing number of public tracks run over the hills’ tussock and bush. The Charteris Bay Golf Club and Orton Bradley Park are just half an hour away. Drive for an hour via Wild Cattle Hill and Pigeon Bay, and you can reach Akaroa and immerse yourselves in its Gallic vibe and variety of attractions. In another direction, a drive of forty-five minutes over the exciting Western valley road will bring you to Little River, with its vibrant Little River Gallery and Café, and from there to the Peninsula’s wild southern bays. If you want to stock up on supplies or get a quick bite to eat, it is only a twenty minute drive to the nearest shops, cafes and petrol at Diamond Harbour. A tranquil and scenic escape to a peaceful and beautiful world awaits you at Matagouri Cottage.
As the Owhetoro Stream is of course unfenced, adults should closely supervise any young children to ensure their safety near water.
The contours of the hills mean that the cottage does not have cellphone reception. There is cellphone reception in other parts of Port Levy.
A platter like the one pictured may be able to be ordered for your stay at this property. As there is no phone reception at the property you will need to pre-order the platter prior to your stay, ensuring at least 48 hours notice is given. Please enquire with Bachcare for more information, but do be aware this service is not provided by Bachcare and therefore availability is at the discretion of the local vendor.
Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.About the location
