“Wow. We live in a turn of the century fully restored villa bungalow which is our little museum of past and present generations.”

This holiday brought together our siblings and their children together from around the rural North Island. We and they felt at home because it had a similar feel. Exemplifying the past and valuing the present. Little treats were left by the kitchen and they seriously went down a treat with both our daughters and their partners! The home was warm and welcoming, our grandchildren delighted in playing with the playmobile and their parents were able to cast their relaxing music to enjoy too. The top ...

The top of the range cooling facilities were also well used and appreciated as we came together in every way including cooking as a family. The bathrooms were well presented and hot water endless with outstanding pressure. The sleeping arrangements were well spaced and allowed for challenging sleeper grandchildren! The two get together areas allowed the older children some autonomy while the adults a quiet place to rest during the work of family life. All over 10/10. Recommendations, more dish washing liquid as we actually do dishes as a family too.

The property

Stay in a slice of New Zealand history! March down to the Ohakune Barracks for a holiday experience like no other! Previously located in Shelly Bay, Wellington, and transported to Ohakune, this former Air Force barracks is steeped in history and loaded with all the essentials for an enjoyable getaway. This beautifully refurbished home has been designed to be a Scandinavia mountain lodge meets Aotearoa, the owner has sourced and displayed a treasure trove of memorabilia and vintage furnishings that will bring back memories of the good ol' days. Start your day off in the contemporary kitchen with all the bells and whistles, including a Nespresso coffee machine to give you a caffeine kick before your day's adventures. Bring everyone together at the end of the day in the spacious open-plan living and dining space, watching TV in a dedicated separate lounge, cosied up by the fireplace or enjoy a nice hot Spa, posting the snaps from the day using the complimentary Wi-Fi. Accommodating up to 10 guests across 5 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, the Ohakune Barracks is perfectly set up as a retreat for families for a year-round holiday escape to the central North Island. Step outside of the Ohakune Barracks to take in the striking views of the alpine peaks of Mt Ruapehu as you make a plan for the day. Will you take the three-minute drive (or 1.7km flat walk) into town and get a bite to eat at one of the great cafes or restaurants, or will you head out on an adrenaline-filled adventure. Spend the day shredding the slopes at Turoa or Whakapapa, just 22 minutes' or 47 minutes drive away respectively. In summer there are some great hiking and mountain biking trails in the Tongariro National Park. When you get home, make use of the drying racks to keep your gear warm and dry for the next day. All the comforts of a home away from home await, here at Ohakune Barracks!

Guests should bring their own Nespresso compatible pods to make use of the available machine.

As there is a section of the deck without a barrier with a small drop on to grass and concrete, all guests should take care when using this area due to the risk of falls.

Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.
