Purau

REFINE SEARCH

The site of one of the earliest Maori settlements, Purau Bay is rich in history with many ancient burial sites. Moa hunters most likely lived in this area, and the remains of moa ovens have been found. The Ngati Mamoe people lived in the region first. Their guarded site was perched on the peak of Te Ahu Patiki (Mount Herbert) overlooking what is now known as Lyttleton Harbour. The bay was later settled by the Ngai Tahu who intermarried with the earlier tribe, absorbing them into their ranks. Under the Ngai Tahu the fortified pa was relocated to the western side of the bay. Today, the sensational vista of the Banks Peninsula shoreline attracts those drawn in by its natural beauty. The allure of Purau Bay lies in its gorgeous views and unspoiled landscape. All of our Purau Bay accommodations are pre-inspected prior to your arrival and are ready for instant online booking.
