Charleen “Had a wonderful relaxing break at the Cowshed cottage/cabin with my furbaby.”
The kitchen was well stocked with “everything” bbq utensils, cutlery, plates, cups and glasses right down to salt and pepper (very important). Used the BBQ Webber every day. Cabin was very clean and well organised. Beautiful outlook to the beach and nature. Lovely and peaceful spot with the sound of nature (the local chorus of birds). The best pet friendly accommodation in the north!

Kristie “We had a very restful and relaxing stay.”
We loved the peace and quiet, private beach, miles from a main road, bush setting, nature all around, hundreds of birds, stunning views. Use of kayaks and sun shelter by the beach a bonus as well as being dog friendly. Due to amazing weather we hardly spent any time inside, but the little cottage was great, especially the weber bbq and we found the bed comfy. We will definitely be back.
- Kristie, January 2024Louis “It’s very hot in the unit and although it has ceiling fans, not much help in that kind of humidity.”
Other then that, it was a wonderful experience.

Needed body wash - hand soap Bed was too narrow and felt like rolling off Kitchen paper towels needed The highlight was the native birds
- Annie, November 2023We appreciate your review and we’re pleased you enjoyed the native birds. We have passed along your feedback. While we provide some basic amenities such as oil, salt, and pepper, however, guests are encouraged to bring their own shower supplies. We are following up with the local team to make sure that the basic amenities are fully stocked for future guests. Bachcare
Ben “We had a wonderful stay once again at Wairoro - so quiet and relaxing.”
Everything you need is provided. We didn’t take our dog this time but have had some lovely times there with him. Do be aware that there are lots of ducks around so if your dog is a chaser you’d have to keep them inside, and supervise at all times outside. Thank you once again and we’ll be back again soon.
- Ben, October 2023Neil “Great spot so lucky to be able to take dogs with us too”
- Neil, March 2023Catrina “Lovely natural kiwi bach environment.”
We loved the friendly tui's, pigeons, doves & weka. We only heard the kiwi at night. The cottage was well set up with a fridge hob, microwave, lovely weber bbq and a good range of kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery. Would be even better with an ice-cube tray and extra coffee cups - so us lazy ones only had to wash up once or twice a day ;-). We were a little disappointed with the info from Bachcare - yes we booked in on Xmas day.! All we asked for was clear instructions about the facilities and how to get in. No, the key wasn't under the mat - the cottage was unlocked, the key in the fruit bowl and a good info compendium inside, so all good in the end. Xmas can be busy and stressful. Fabulous place to relax.
- Catrina, December 2022Heinrich “Would definitely book again.”
Thanks
- Heinrich, December 2022Gabrielle “An amazing spot, on the edge of a gorgeous wee bay and only 10 mins to Russell.”
Well appointed cabin that had everything we needed. Would definitely go back. Very dog friendly which was great. if you’re not keen on dogs be mindful there’s likely to be lots around.
- Gabrielle, October 2022Marie “Great spot, nice and peaceful, lots of birdlife.”
Cabins are small but have all you need. Great that the dogs can come too, need to keep a very close eye on them though as city dogs don't understand electric fences, horses or cattle! We kept ours on a lead on the property
- Marie, September 2022Monique “Fantastic location and grounds, fabulous for dogs.”
Heard kiwi calling in the night, and was a lovely view to take in. Unfortunately the cabin was tired and disappointing. It looked like surfaces were cleaned but nothing else - dust and dirt in the corners and along the side of the bathroom floor, and thick layer of dust on the ceiling fans and bathroom vent. Bathroom was in desperate need of repair, shower door wouldn't close and basin tap was nearly falling off. Blinds had stains on them and looked like they'd never been cleaned. The mini oven was filthy. Was such a disappointment but I ended up cleaning to make our stay more comfortable. If some time and maintenance was spent on the cabin it would be a lovely place to stay.
- Monique, April 2022Patrick “What a lovely retreat.”
We really enjoyed our stay.
- Patrick, March 2022Shannon “Basic accommodation as advertised, but the beautiful setting and beach, and being dog-friendly makes it a place my dog, Boh, and I would love to come back to!”
Cowshed looks out towards the beach so would be my pick of the cabins and I had several sightings of cheeky wekas and quail right from the balcony. The property is a great home base to explore the area. The Opua to Russell walkway crosses the property just before the main road entrance (stiles across the fence on both sides of the gravel road). I parked up near the stiles to start the walk from there. One of the sections was closed due to a slip so I had to walk along the road which was a bit sketchy with a dog and no path, but the rest of the walk was beautiful and varied - a pitstop for fish & chips, ice cream and a paddle in Russell made it even better!
- Shannon, January 2022Wendy “A absolute private piece of paradise.”
Hassle free. The sounds of birds including Kiwi calling out. The water splashing. Cannot fault it. Will be back and will highly recommend. Thank you to the family for allowing the public to experience their holiday spot Thankyou!
- Wendy, December 2021David “Clean cabin , but really small, outside landscaping was very ugly and mostly unkempt, driveway was really muddy and bumpy, almost nonexistent signage.”
- David, August 2021Thank you for your review, David! We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the outdoor areas and will be working with the local property owners in the necessary improvements. Regarding the driveway and terrain, this is something that can happen during winter when the weather is very wet, changing completely in summer during the dry season. We will work on ways to improve this for next winter. Bachcare

Jenny “Lovely setting- many choices of accommodation and plenty of activities.”
Pet friendly. Idyllic beachfront- just a gem.
- Jenny, June 2021Paula “***** We loved our stay in the serene surroundings and private beach.”
To wake to the sound of native birds chirping all around with the sea view was so relaxing. The bach was clean and tidy and we could not have wanted anything more (except we would have loved to have been able to stay a lot longer) The property owner(s) we so friendly. Being pet friendly was a real plus. Our fur babies loved their walks on the beach several times a day and visiting all the surrounding beaches around the Russell area. Would definitely stay here again.
- Paula, May 2021Wayne “We are returning guests who enjoy the laid back style, and the commitment to allowing dogs to travel with us.”
It really makes a difference. Wayne & Kathy
- Wayne, May 2021Garth “Fantastic location, directly off of the Opua ferry.”
Right next to a fantastic winery that makes great pizzas. Property is one of the few dog friendly ones available in that pricing - it was a dog haven. Accommodation was rustic and needs a few upgrades (bed & shower). Lots of mosquitoes so bring spray. Beach access was incredible. You have your own private cove from which you can paddle board and kayak with the free kayaks (even life jackets were supplied).
- Garth, March 2021Jeff “A beautiful place in such a serene setting.”
A great getaway spot
- Jeff, February 2021Beatrix “Thanks for a great stay, the big heaters made it very cosy in winter, and we and our little dog enjoyed walking in the gardens and little beach.”
We will be back
- Beatrix, July 2020Kelly “Great location.”
- Kelly, January 2020Liz “The scruffiness of the grounds in front the cabin was the only thing that reduced our stay from a 5 star to a 4 star.”
The bach itself was immaculate, with a lovely water view, very comfy and we really, really appreciated that dogs were so welcomed.
- Liz, December 2019Ranee “The little cottage was retro, cosy and clean.”
It has all the basics you need. It is dog friendly which we loved although the cottage itself is not fenced. There is a small, raised deck for sitting outside albeit any sea views are now obscured by the (beautiful) mature trees. The property is just as described but the grounds do need some maintenance attention. Very quiet and peaceful. The bachcare property manager was great to deal with. The booking website did not have the specials that were listed on the property website and when we queried, the property manager was great to deal with, the bachcare customer support were not. They we unhelpful and offered no solutions. Thankfully the property manager sorted it for us.
- Ranee, April 2019Hi Ranee, thank you for your feedback. We think it's a real bonus to have a pet friendly property and have ensured that the listing outlines that the property is not fenced. We apologise for the confusion regarding the specials and have since updated all the different listing channels so that the same special is reflected. Bachcare
Barnaby “A delightfully laid back, peaceful and slightly dated venue in an idyllic location with a small but accessible beach, games room and plenty of space for everyone.”
Adjacent to a great fishing spot and a fine vineyard for a glass of wine and some tasty food - who needs wifi!
- Barnaby, February 2019Ryan “Wairoro is a great place to stay - very peaceful and relaxing, with plenty of space, for the dog to roam, and a lovely private beach.”
We stayed when it was fully booked but very rarely encountered other guests, so it really did feel like our own private retreat. Would happily stay here again.
