Chris “Awesome little kiwi bach with a large deck, close to the beach, plenty of board games and no TV!”
for that real cool proper kiwi holiday vibe, we had a few unforseen issues that both the owner and bachcare did not know about to which bach care delt with promptly to fix and was much appreciated, would highly recommend staying at this bach through bach care and we hope to use it again next year for the same event

Harriett “We loved our stay.”
Amazing location. Cutest set up. Loved all the old whangamata photos and vintage decor. Perfect for our families, the kids had a wonderful time. A proper kiwi bach. Thank you
- Harriett, November 2023Bronwyn “Property is in an incredible location so close to the beach and has a real Bachy feel.”
We had a couple of dramas with doors due to the age of the property but Bachcare and maintenance company were onto it so quickly giving us the option to fix straight away or when we left which we appreciated. If your after modern and minimalist this isn't the place for you, it is as the photos show, bachy, retro and eclectic which we loved.
- Bronwyn, September 2023Katherine “We thought this was a very old and dirty bach.”
The showers were dirty and the shower heads looked like they had mould on them. Our mattress was ok-ish but the bed just was held together with wooden slats. The wall in the bach were covered with burlap, the floor with sisal. Both unable to clean properly. The door knobs were wood so sgain dirty as and no way you can clean that properly. All cups were tea stained. The cleaning utensils were old and dirty as well. I had to buy anti bacterial wipes and luckily I had my own tea towels and dish cloth with me. Attached you find photos of complaints above and more.
- Katherine, April 2023Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at Vintage Pohutukawa. You will be pleased to know we are currently addressing the concerns you have raised and thank you for bringing these to our attention. Bachcare

Really good place to stay perfect Bach experience, more comfortable beds would be nice, awesome location across the road from the beach, would like to come and stay in the summer
- Bill, August 2022Lucy “We enjoyed our stay at Vintage Pohutukawa.”
My great grandparents used to own the house and my mum used to holiday there as a child- she was blown away that not much had changed since then! The house was very cool and retro, however it was in desperate need of a deep clean as we had to clean a few things before using. It was also very cold, only a couple of oil heaters to heat up the whole house! It would be great in Summer time.

Really good for families lots of reading books games and puzzles in case of rain, close to the beach and Blackies cafe, we would like to stay there again
- Bill, September 2021Courtney “Such a great place to stay.”
Bach has a home vibe and the beach is so close you feel relaxed just hearing the waves.
- Courtney, April 2021Di “We had a fantastic weekend at this very cool, retro bach.”
8 adults and there wasn't once when we felt crowded at all. Across the road from the beach with the walkway only a couple of houses down it was perfect! Kitted with everything you could ever need, including extra blankets (cold snap came through that weekend) for a tv free weekend! it has a really cool 'feeling' to it and we loved the family vibe it had evoking memories of the family holidays we had as kids - its just that kind of place. We will be back, everyone loved it, thank you for sharing it with us. p.s. if you are looking for a flash, new, ritzy type of place then this isn't for you - but if you want a cool, beachy, sandy feet type of holiday then this is the one.

Bookcases were full of great books to read and games to play. So peaceful (no TV which was great!) and close to the beach and the surf club. An easy walk into town.

The property
This original 4-bedroom 1940s bach (one of the first in Whangamata!) with all the charm of real old Kiwi summer baches, and with plenty of living indoors and out. Low key, warm and friendly, it's been a magnet for families for over 35 years. The Whangamata bach features a generous deck in front that catches glimpses of the sea and is shaded by the ancient pohutukawa tree for outdoor meals or lounging, while a smaller porch with sofa is the perfect napping spot. A deck off the kitchen is the sunset cocktail centre, easy to supervise the barbecue chef. Under the pohutukawa tree there's room for all the deck chairs, a chair hammock and regular one, so there is no arguing over lounging pozzies. The stainless steel and rimu kitchen has enough room for two cooks to work happily together, with a modern stove and fridge freezer, plenty of good pots and pans, and a microwave. No dishwasher, that's the family-bonding time for the kids. In summer there is a herb garden going for family and guests. Living room and four indoor bedrooms have charming vintage style. Master double bedroom has en-suite bathroom with a tub for bathing small folks plus laundry. Second bathroom includes shower and separate toilet. Guest accommodation includes a second double bedroom, a bedroom with 3 singles and 2 rollaways, and a cosy single room. The shelves are stacked with games, books (including vintage sets of Agatha Christie and Dick Francis), toys for the kids and a radio. The garage has boogie boards, sand and fishing toys, boules and croquet, and the most novel beer fridge in town. Outdoor shower, solar powered (that's a hose, in the sun) for rinsing off, and plenty of room on the double section to fit both cars and the essential cricket games. Park the car and jump on the two old-fashioned bicycles to pedal around town (plus one kid's bike). Cross the road to the beach, wander 100 m to the Surf Club or Blackie's coffee. Head over to the estuary for quiet paddle. It's the perfect set up for two families with small kids, but equally cosy for winter weekends for two. The slice of history is waiting for future memories.....
As there is a section of the deck without a barrier with a small drop on to grass, all guests should take care when using this area due to the risk of falls.
There are no more than 8 adults at all times with remainder to be children 17 yrs and under.
The ramp leading in to the property is not suitable for wheelchairs and the front ranch slider door entrance has a lip also not suitable for wheelchairs.
Please note a bond may be charged at certain times of the year. One of our team members will contact you if this is required for your booking.About the location
