Rebecca “A really lovely spot.”
Thank you.
Thank you.
- Rebecca, March 2024 -
Jess “The property is in a great location but we had mice crawling around kitchen at night and around our kids toys in the lounge area in the morning.”
We were pretty uncomfortable with this so left a night early. Property has lots of potential to be great but needs some pest control and general maintenance particularly outside as it is very rundown. We received a partial refund but given we left a night early, it was a very expensive stay for an average to poor house. We were pretty disappointed and wouldn’t recommend staying here.
- Jess, February 2024Hi Jess. Thank you for providing a review on your holiday with us. We apologise that you had to experience these issues and wanted to let you know that we are addressing this with urgency. Our local manager has confirmed that they have not seen any signs of mice at the property but will be organising a pest-removal service here. I understand that our feedback team have been in contact with you on a couple of occasions to organise a compensation amount, which we think is now fair. On the maintenance issues, the property owner is aware of these and are to be addressed in their next visit. With that said, thank you for sharing your feedback on your stay here and we will address this with importance. Bachcare
Greg “Hi, what magic a spot for us and our two Aussie Shepherds to have a wee holiday - absolute beach front, extensive lawns (for play and exercise), a reasonably well fenced section, loverly old bungalow (so a timeless atmosphere for a genuine kiwi bach) with clean, modern and well appointed bathrooms, and all the appliances one could wish for.”
Thank you Bachcare.
- Greg, October 2023Anke “We really enjoyed our stay in Pakawau.”
For us the location was perfect (close to beaches, Farewell Spit, Whanganui Inlet, for kayaking and fishing; not too far from Collingwood and the Old School Cafe nearby was nice). We also liked the layout with some room in the garage and a room to dry clothes etc. The kitchen was fully functional and had all cooking utensils we needed. Knives were sharp, yay! It was clean and we did not see any mice in the kitchen as reported by previous guests. (We may have heard heard some in the roof once). I guess it's still a good idea to store away food safely over night (e.g. fridge, systema boxes or use the oven as a safe). I guess the mouse problem reported by previous guests was also the reason why there was hardly any basic cooking ingredients. I think there was salt, sugar, tea and coffee, nothing else. Not a problem, I was just glad we brought pretty much everything and could get had we hadn't brought in Collingwood. It's always guesswork what you will find. The garden was really nice, too. On our 2nd day someone came by and mowed the lawn. from the garden we could get directly to the beach. At low tide a bit of a walk to the water, at high tide the water comes up to almost the lower part of the tiered garden. The beach is very flat. There was an apple and a lemon tree in the garden and some fresh mint and rosemary. Lots of curious fantails around and we were happy to find a compost bin, too. The garden was quite sheltered from the wind. Collection of DVDs was good and some games and books etc. Internet connection was good, we also had cell phone connection. We really liked our stay and would probably come back, although we would probably also look for something a bit cheaper first. Reasons for not giving an extraordinary rating: - there were 2 kayaks and a c-tow in the garage (also flotation vests). This is great, but we wished it had been mentioned in the description, as we would have left our own kayaks at home then. Would have saved us quite some fuel and effort. I'd highly recommend to include the kayaks in your property description as it can be a selling point for some (for us it would have been - we actually first tried to book another property because aus kayaks being mentioned and only ended up with this one after our first choice with the kayaks was not available). - it is a bit pricey - only a back-up BBQ was available, which had no cover, so we had difficulties cooking some stuff one day and then finished the stuff in the oven. - we could not see a key for the garage and the opener does not seem to work. - However, we were able to lock and unlock it from the inside. - The way the fridge is set up does not allow to fully open the vegetables drawer. Consider mounting the fridge door on the other side (probably means you need to shift it slightly to the left). Thanks for a great stay!
- Anke, April 2023Irene “The electric system needs to be upgraded with a new switch board It lets the nice house down Also the property smells of mice , we saw them running in the kitchen ….”
. perhaps thorough pest control is good to do …. Otherwise we really liked the house and location The bathrooms were very nice !
- Irene, February 2023Thank you for your review Irene. We are sorry to hear you found some amenities not up to standard. Your feedback has been taken onboard and we are working on a plan for maintenance between the regularly scheduled cleans. In addition to this, all pest control is taken seriously, monitored and will be dealt with in a timely manner. Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon. Bachcare
David “We had a lovely stay in Golden Bay, having said that, there were a few issues that we can provide constructive feedback on relating to the property.”
1. We feel the unit was overpriced for what it was. We had friends staying down the other end of Pakawau beach, paying significantly less for a (in our view) superior product. It was superior due to its location adjacent to the beachfront, general layout and space inside, generous and we'll laid out outdoor space, and view. 2. There were mice in the ceiling which did not create a nice environment for rest and a good sleep at night. 3. The extractor fan in the kitchen was old and very noisy. 4. A light circuit stopped working on day 4 of our stay, so we had not good light at the bedroom end of the property for three days. 5. Smoke from a fire at one of the neighboring properties (south side) blew onto the property in the afternoon/evening which meant we couldn't use the outdoor space. This fixed itself in the last couple of days with the arrival of the northerly prevailing wind. 6. There was a musty/rising damp smell at the bedroom end of house when the house was left closed for a short period whilst we were on an excursion. To summarise, I have now stayed in three different houses on that stretch of beach over the last five years and this one was not to the standard of the other two. I wouldn't return nor recommend it to anyone. Additionally, due to the mice, faulty lights issue, and very noisy extractor fan I would request some sort of refund since I don't consider the house was up to a basic level to pay such an exorbitant rate for. On a positive note, the house was generally tidy and clean and the bathrooms were modern. The lounge dining was small but functional and the kitchen could do with more pantry space. Feel free to contact me direct. David

Leigh “The house is cozy even in winter.”
Beds lovely and comfy, great showers/bathroom and the kitchen has all we needed. Loved the garden area right beside the beach so the birdsong was wonderful.
- Leigh, June 2022Aimee “Loved our stay!”
The perfect kiwiana crib, reminded us of childhood holidays at the beach! Our dogs loved the very quiet beach and the house was comfortable, warm and quiet. We had a wonderful rest in beautiful Golden Bay.
- Aimee, March 2022Marany “Older bach with amazing views and a good location.”
However, the property is let down by not being very clean and with a mandatory cleaning fee we thought that is unacceptable. Could be easily fixed though.
- Marany, December 2021Christine “Lovely comfortable Bach with great views and easy beach access.”
Would love to come back again in summer.

- Neil, March 2021Thank you for your feedback Neil. We are happy to hear you enjoyed this lovely bach on the beach, and appreciate you giving us more details separately on how we can improve our bach management. We will take this onboard to improve in the future. Bachcare

- Jane, December 2020Robert “Older Bach with a great view and location.”
Very comfortable beds and new bathrooms. Loved our stay.
- Robert, November 2020Wendy “Property was clean and comfortable.”
Views amazing.
- Wendy, February 2020Carla “Loved our stay and being able to take the dog was fantastic great batch to stay with fantastic views and a great spot on the beach it had everything we needed also having two bathrooms was a great bonus, the only negative for myself was the main bedroom the bed was soft and not good for my back.”
So we did move to the other room which the bed was a lot more comfortable, this may not be for everyone but my thing when traveling is having a decent bed. But a great stay will come back
- Carla, February 2020Rhonwyn “Overpriced.”
Outside area garden/deck/furniture unattractive compared to other baches rented in Pakawau... but view excellent. Manager very pleasant and helpful. Spotlessly clean.

- Georgia, January 2020tracey “Loved our stay at pakawau a perfect place for 2 couples.”
