Sharon “Great house in a great spot, just perfect for our family of 4.”
- Sharon, July 2023 -
Kiti “We loved the property!”
It had a perfect holiday home feel about it and the deck amongst the canopy was spectacular. There were loads of board games to keep us entertained and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook with. Great location, being so close to the lake and walks. Would definitely stay there again if in the area.
- Kiti, January 2023Ricky “This was the absolute perfect getaway.”
My partner and I just felt like we were at a 2nd home. We loved all the little touches that brought the place to life. The fire place was just the absolute best. Thank you so much, we were very happy with our stay.
- Ricky, August 2022Shaelyn “This was a lovely retro house with lots of things to look at at plenty of great games to play!”
Great DVD collection and a pleasant location amongst the trees. The kids loved it! My only suggestion would be to make sure there is material to light the fire (newspaper, matches). The listing said pet friendly, however the property is not fenced off so if your fur babies like to roam this would be an issue. I would love to visit again in the summertime.
- Shaelyn, June 2022Steve “A typical kiwiana bach, with all and more provided.”
The pot belly stove kept the place warm, and the heaters provided well used as we hit 2 degrees. Bush surrounded and birds galore.. Close to thermal pools, and Turangi. The lockwood was very noisy with the temperature fluctuations.
- Steve, May 2021Vanessa “Highly recommend this property, has everything you need, great for a small family”
- Vanessa, April 2021Michelle “This property is homley and kept in great shape!”
We didn't want for anything. The beds were comfortable and all bedding provided was excellent! Only real negatives were that the water pressure was pretty low but not huge deal breaker! Also something to remember for those whom have never slept in a true Lockwood house are the pops bang as the wood settles with temperature changes at night.
- Michelle, February 2021Maureen “Birds galore!”
In the trees, we were greeted with Tuis every day. Lovely property with cool retro vibe, perfect for small family and close to the beautiful Pukawa end of the lake for swimming.

The property
Piwakawaka ā Pukawa is a delightfully charming and cosy holiday home near the edge of Lake Taupo. The house name refers to the Piwakawaka, a friendly native bird known as the Fantail. You will see Fantails flitting from perch to perch in the bush surrounding the house. Sleeping up to 6 across 2 bedrooms, there's plenty of space for the whole family to relax and unwind in tranquil Pukawa Bay. A retro log cabin feel with wood panelling, Kiwiana art, bright comfy cushions and blankets. Wrap yourself up in a cosy blanket on the couch to sip your morning coffee and listen to a tune on the record player. The living area flows out onto the large outdoor deck amongst native bush treetops. This is the perfect place to enjoy an evening drink as you listen to birdsong. Fire up the BBQ and enjoy dinner al fresco on the deck! Only a 5-minute walk to the lake's edge and Pukawa Bay, where you can skip rocks, wander the beach, launch the boat and picnic amongst serene surroundings. There are also 2 kayaks available to paddle the beautiful lake. After a day of exploring, snuggle up in front of the fireplace with your loved ones. Holiday bliss awaits right here!!
