Viktor “We stayed with my husband in this Bach in August.”
As soon as we entered the house, we were amazed at how much smaller it was compare to how it looks on the photos. I want to objectively describe the pros and cons of this Bach, because I myself do not like surprises when the price is quite high. Pros: 1. Definitely a great view. Wherever you are in the house, you have a stunning view of Lake Tarawera everywhere. 2. Peace and quiet. The house stands along the road, but cars pass very rarely and you can't hear them. 3. 3. Fireplace - this turned out to be the only saver on cold days. We had a hitpump working all the time, but it was not enough to heat a fairly cold house. One night it just turned off because the temperature was below zero. 4. Comfortable beds. 5. Renovated bathroom on the second floor (the bathroom on the first floor was quite old so we did not use it). Cons : 1. The house is still small and needs to be renovated. There is a slightly unpleasant smell that you get used to. 2. I think it is quite sufficient for 4 people, but no more. 3. Old cabinets in the kitchen were difficult to open. 4. Weak pressure in the shower. You can freeze while taking shower. 5. Sockets on the second floor can withstand only one heater, but it is not enough. 6. In fact, there are only two rooms. The third zone is a hallway. 7. If you come with more than two cars or a boat, make sure to think about where to park. We were looking for a quiet place with a view and a fireplace - this Bach had it all. We would definitely love to spend our three days off in this secluded piece of paradise again. Thanks to the owners for giving us this opportunity.

Jane “Beautiful bed, wonky floors, great fire, true kiwi bach with amazing views.”
Thanks for having us. Listing showed sunny deck but no sun at all for us even though the weather was great.
- Jane, June 2023Kevin “Real Kiwi Bach.”
We stayed 3 nights, close to the Black Barn wedding venue, and boat ramps for our extended weekend. Really enjoyed the deck in the afternoon with a wine watching the boats on the lake. Very relaxing. We had a tandem jetski trailer which was a bit tight to reverse back onto the road, but all good. The only negative if I had to find one, was the slight musky smell when we first arrived but opened all the windows and cleared fairly quickly. we really enjoyed our stay
- Kevin, March 2023Thank you for your feedback about the smell and we have addressed this with the local team. We're happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and look forward to hosting you again! Bachcare
Carl “Our 1st time we used Book a Batch or BatchCare thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
The Batch we had was exactly that a good Kiwi Batch had all the comfort required , instructions were clear . After going through Cyclone Gabrielle, having 4 days of beautiful weather,Attending our niece’s wedding was just the tonic required. Definitely recommend booking 32 Spencer Rd Lake Tarawera. I know it was noted to us , but having a hand rail enclosing the deck would make it more reassuring of heights. Still had a great 4 days. Thanks Carl
- Carl, February 2023Brooke “Old but lovely clean and tidy.”
Super handy for us attending a wedding at black barn
- Brooke, February 2023Carolyn “Older style bach, plenty to do and see, easy to get to Rotorua, beautiful views over Lake Tarawera from front of property, even has resident glow worms to be seen at night outside upstairs bathroom window.”
Comfortable stay.
- Carolyn, January 2023Melanie “Great stay at classic old fashioned bach.”
No problems with hot water. Be careful on the stairs. Xbox jammed shut and Playstation has no games. There is a great jumping spot close to the house, turn left at the road and look for the blue post. Really enjoyed our stay.
- Melanie, January 2023Jamila “Me and my family”
- Jamila, September 2022Philippa “Loved the old kiw bach style.”

- m, February 2022Hamish “Great location and amazing view!”
Driveway is a little tight with the boat but not a major. A classic kiwi bach!
- Hamish, January 2022Brett “Old property and not up to current building standards but comfortable for short stay”
- Brett, January 2022Khrystal “We enjoyed our stay here!”
Great location! Could do with a bit of love and personal touches. Great outdoor deck and awesome selection of board games etc. We came home very happy with our week long stay. Thank you xx

- Akacia, May 2021Akacia “Enjoyed the lovely cozy Bach, nice area if you are wanting to get away from every day life!”
- Akacia, May 2021Susan “Great view”
- Susan, February 2021Belinda “Older bach, beautiful views over the lake and mountain.”
Access to lake down steep track. Very basic kitchen utensils
- Belinda, February 2021Nigel “Obvious issues with the hot water tank not working had a big effect on our stay.”
Given the number of elements in the draw clearly this was not a new problem. Porn cds in the collection not really a great look when you have families staying. Safety issues around the edge of the deck. All that said we like the Bach feel and the views are great ..... but it’s a real authentic Bach. 7/10. So not a disaster but plenty to work on. Bbq was lovely and clean.
- Nigel, January 2021Thank you for your feedback Nigel and we are sorry about the issues you had with the hot water during your stay. We are glad we were able to come to a resolution with you after your stay and the owner has been able to resolve the problem since. We are happy to hear you enjoyed the bach feel and wonderful views. Lynda “Amazing views of the mountain and lake from the front deck are the most special aspect of this property.”
Easy access to the walking track around the edge of the lake. We enjoyed watching all the birds - particularly the tui and keruru darting past. The beds in the main bedrooms are comfy. The metal bunk bed is probably more suited to younger children. Nice new comfy carpet and lino. Charms of a bach.
- Lynda, January 2021Leanne “Lovely little bach.”
Very kiwi, which just adds to the overall pleasant experience. Everything that you could possibly need was there. Very cosy and inviting with phenomenal views. Had a lovely stay, only regret is that it wasn’t for a longer length of time. Great communication from Joey. Thanks so much.
- Leanne, November 2020Giovan “A great little bach with a magnificent view of Mt Tarawera and the lake.”
We stayed on a particularly cold weekend but there was ample supply of firewood to keep ourselves warm. The lack of internet (which we were fully aware about) didn't bother us too much because we came prepared with board games and book. Would stay here again next time I intend to go on holiday in the Tararua region.
- Giovan, July 2020Sonya “Beautiful view, fantastic having the 2 bathrooms.”
Lovely and cosy with the fire. Great access to the bush walk down to the lake.
- Sonya, May 2020Alla “This Bach was perfect for the 6 of us.”
We had a wedding to go to at the black barn and this Bach is located just around the corner. Lovely views of the lake.
- Alla, February 2020Matthew “Great Bach with awesome views over the lake and mountain.”

- Kelsey, October 2019Petra “We stayed for the second time here and we loved it, this is such a great place ...”
We stayed for the second time here and we loved it, this is such a great place with everything you need, DVDs, board games and more it’s great having no reception too and being able to switch off and if you have kids you can teach them things with all that free time :) overall we will definitely come back here again in the future the fire warms the entire place it’s awesome and the views are absolutely stunning
- Petra, August 2019Sue “This place was amazing.”

The property
Smoked Trout is a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom Lake Tarawera bach. Enjoy a comfortable stay in this older style bach located in peaceful surrounds and boasting magnificent views of Lake Tarawera! This Lake Tarawera bach is a comfortably furnished two level home. On the upper level there is a lounge and two bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with two bunks plus a trundler bed (the double bedroom is accessed via the bunk room) and a bathroom. Outside, there is a big deck perfect for soaking up some sun and getting stuck into a good book. Lake Tarawera has pristine water quality and is well known for its excellent trout fishing. This bach is ideal for kicking back and letting life slow right down. Blue Lake and Lake Okareka are nearby and perfect for all boating activity - particularly water skiing and biscuiting! Take out the single kayak (lifejackets included) for a great day in the water and sun! Or simply chill-out at the house and enjoy an extensive collection of books and board games! Across the lake is the outlet, where the walkway follows what is commonly known as the disappearing stream. Walk further down the track and you descend down a cliff face, and once at the bottom you can look back and see the disappearing stream re-appear. This cliff face has a waterfall. Smoked Trout is also close to the famous buried village, a fascinating day trip to add to your itinerary. Welcome to a piece of paradise at Lake Tarawera!
All guests should take extra care on the deck as there is no barrier to prevent falls.
Steps leading to second floor are quite steep but there is a handrail in place.
Please note that there is limited mobile phone reception at this property due to the remote location.
Please note that there is no wifi available at this property.
There are a variety of lifejackets in different sizes available for guest use with the kayak
Ample boat parking at top of steep driveway although not suitable for a large boat.
